A Dying Breed exposes the struggles of black youth.

Bright Lights Series books are written to tell the story of children in urban settings. They are intended to show a different perspective of inner city life – from the perspective of a child trying to stay on a straight and narrow path, struggling to do so all the way.

The main characters, DeShaun (A Dying Breed) and Jasmine (Not So Princess Jasmine – coming 2022) are black, but these stories should be read by children and adults of all shades and hues.

The stories are realistic, yet positive. Ultimately, these stories should teach us all a lesson or two about what it’s like to live in the skin of a young child in the inner city.

YOU’LL WANT TO READ THIS IF:

  • you’re a young black person and you don’t see your story being told the right way
  • you teach black students and want to get a better understanding of their lives
  • you’re the parent of a black or mixed race child and want to discuss tougher issues with them but don’t know how
