Stories That Give Young People a Voice
The Bright Lights Series tells stories about children growing up in urban communities, where making the right choices isn’t always easy. These books offer a look at inner-city life through a child’s eyes, including the pressure to fit in, the challenges of growing up, and the struggle to stay on the right path when life pulls you in other directions.
Meet DeShaun, the main character of A Dying Breed, and Jasmine, the lead character of Not So Princess Jasmine. Both characters are Black, but their stories aren’t meant for one audience alone. They’re for children and adults of all backgrounds who want to understand experiences different from their own.
These stories are honest about the challenges young people face, but they don’t lose sight of hope. They give readers a chance to see beyond assumptions, understand the choices children make, and think about what it means to grow up in a world that doesn’t always make things easy.
These Books Are for You If:
- You’re a young Black reader who wants to see characters and experiences that reflect your own life.
- You’re an educator who wants to help students understand different perspectives and start meaningful conversations about the realities Black youth face.
- You’re a parent of a Black or mixed-race child who wants to open up conversations about difficult topics, identity, and the pressures of growing up.
